Okay, so I think keeping a blog on here will be kind of fun and let you all into my life a little more. For now, though, my first post is gonna be really just a “hello, world” post where I let you all know some stuff about me so maybe you have things to talk about with me when it comes time to your appointment or maybe it’ll ease your worry about who the heck is doing your hair and how they’re gonna be. I hope you all enjoy it and that maybe you find some similarities with me so we can chat about it when you’re here in my chair!!
Who am I? Glad you asked! My name is Kayla Blanco, I am 30 years old as of this lovely post, and I am trying to be your favorite hairstylist! I have been doing hair since 2010-ish where I started in my bathroom cutting and coloring my own hair because Chatsworth and Dalton didn’t have anyone who knew how to do alternative hair, and I was so super scene in high school, as we can see in the photo below.
Anyways, I learned to do my own hair and makeup just following YouTube tutorials, which led my friends to ask who did my hair, and I’d do my friends’ hair after that, and then we got to my Cosmetology class my 10th grade year, and that angel of a woman teaching the class saw something in me that she wanted to nurture (and did). I took Cosmetology until my senior year and then went on to beauty school for a year. (Y’all should actually ask me about beauty school in person because I do not want to get in any trouble for talking smack online hehe) after beauty school, I worked with this lady in Eton who really kept that fire lit under me to keep learning things, and I blame her for my constant nosiness about hair. Truly, she’s the reason I am literally always like “why the heck does the hair do thaaaaat?” I left that salon for many reasons, but mostly because I was ready to work somewhere trendier and busier (who would think Eton, GA would NOT be busy??), and that brought me to Vanity Salon i Chatsworth, which had me working around some of the most talented people in the area, and I learned SO MUCH! There were other salons in between, but I’m gonna skip to working at Ulta, which offered free education for their stylists and I had the pleasure of learning so many things there, but as is often the case in retail, drama struck, and I had to dip out. I took a break for two years to re-evaluate my career. I worked in some very boring 9-5 type jobs from home for a while, and really truly went into a deep depression. I found that I really love this career so much more than I thought, and I heard from everyone how my face would just light up when I’d talk about doing hair. I was going to Becky for my haircuts once I quit Ulta, and she kept trying to push me to get back into doing hair, and in May of 2024, I took the dive and had the honor of working at Hair-nandez Studio with Becky. We are still here going strong. I am beyond ecstatic about the people in my chair day to day, and I am excited to see where the years will take me.
Okay, so outside of that book about my hair career, I love art and music, and you can almost always ask me what I am up to in the upcoming weeks, and there will almost always be a concert involved. I have been to over 50 concerts ranging from small shows in basements to big stadium/arena shows. I have seen some of my favorite artists like Paramore, Julieta Venegas, Soul Glo, Bring Me The Horizon, and many, many more. I spend a lot of free time at my desk either playing Fortnite or scrapbooking. Am I particularly good at Fortnite? That’s debatable, what matters is that I have a good time and get to do my silly little dances with my goofy skins. I also have such a huge spot in my heart for mutual aid and volunteer work. I love to help where I can whether it is donating a haircut for a raffle, keeping resources in the salon on a broad spectrum of topics, finding discreet ways to clothe or feed someone in need, I think that mutual aid is a massive pillar when it comes to describing who I am and what I am passionate about. Outside of myself, mutual aid is truly the only way I personally feel we can heal a community wholly. Helping one another builds trust and a foundation where you and I can both feel supported and can feel comfortable reaching out to ask for help.
Okay, I will hop off my soapbox now. I think I have given you all enough of a novel to read all about me for now. Maybe you found a topic we can talk about at our next appointment or something you didn’t know about me. Whatever the case, I thank you so deeply for reading this far. I can’t wait to get back into blogging on occasion, and I really can’t wait for feedback on this post from you all.
Be kind to yourselves!
